Explaining elearning at its simplest

There are still many elearning novices trying to understand the complexities of the elearning environment. Productivity4you (or p4you for short) helps both sophisticated users as well as novices understand elearning tools.

At its simplest level, there are two essential software programmes that are required:

 Learning Management System (LMS)

A learning management system (or LMS) is the environment where students register and login to their private areas where they can see the courses that are available for them to take and monitor their progress. The other side of the LMS is where tutors can see which of their students have started  which courses and then run various analyses such as pass rates of questions and courses, as well as the length of time students have been on their various courses. At a more detailed level, tutors should be able to see their students’ individual answers and collect coursework.

So the learning management system is where the students and tutors would normally frequent to access their courses and be able to view their progress.

Content Authoring System

The other main software module that is required in e-learning is the content authoring system. A content authoring system is used to create the course content, or “author the content”. Here the author of the content would gather together the multimedia content such as text, pictures, diagrams, animations, voice, video and various quizzes and assessments etc and enter these items into the content authoring system to create the course content. The course content may need to be viewed and edited many times before it is complete. When the course content is finished the author would upload it into the LMS environment and make it available to the tutors. Once in the LMS, the tutors should be able to see it and allocate it to their students or mark it for self allocation.

Allocated content is then available to be used by the students/learners.
